Opening Credits for “Secret Invasion” Produced by AI Draw Criticism from Viewers
There’s already a social media uproar surrounding Marvel’s Secret Invasion, but not for the reasons the studio may have anticipated.
Director Ali Selim admitted to Polygon that the early titles were generated by artificial intelligence, which has caused some controversy for the series, which aired Wednesday with just one episode. Selim said he believes the use of AI for the opening titles created by Method Studios is in line with the ideas of the program.
“That was part of it when we reached out to the AI suppliers, you know? It came straight out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity. That person, who? Who is this?” he continued, noting that despite his enthusiasm, he “doesn’t really understand” how artificial intelligence operates.
“We would talk to them about ideas, topics, and words, then the computer would go off and do something,” he said of the process. Then by using words, we can make a little change in it and it is transformed.
Noting that employing AI has reduced the need for graphic designers and animators to create the opening title, the discovery is attracting some criticism from viewers on social media..
The WGA is currently on strike as a result of failed negotiations with the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which included language about protecting writers against the use of AI in the writing process. This makes the argument especially relevant at this time. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replace workers has become a hot topic in many talks regarding the strike over the past eight weeks.
On social media, some have clarified the writers’ difficulties, while others have opted to simply stop watching the show.

“This is salt in the wounds of all the artists and writers in the WGA strike,” storyboard artist John Lamm posted on Twitter.
“I really loved the first episode of Secret Invasion, but using AI “art” for their intro is just wacky,” commented another person. Miracle, work harder.
Below are more responses. Disney+ is now streaming Secret Invasion.
